NIGERIAN FARMERS SOIL HEALTH SCHEME

Digital Soil Maps

With the commencement of the National Farm and Soil Health Scheme (NFSHS) in 2024, valuable time-series information and legacy data from earlier initiatives are now being incorporated to provide a comprehensive historical perspective. Among these crucial datasets is the Soil Survey and Fertility mapping project conducted in 2021 and 2022.

This program focused on four key Nigerian states of Edo, Oyo, Jigawa, and Gombe. Its primary objectives were to accurately map the soil fertility levels within these regions, pinpoint any critical nutrient deficiencies hindering crop growth, and subsequently provide specific, actionable recommendations for fertilizer application to optimize agricultural output. This extensive exercise yielded invaluable results, successfully generating detailed soil fertility status reports for all participating states. These reports offer crucial data on unique soil compositions and nutrient profiles, significantly enhancing the understanding of regional agricultural needs. The integration of this vital information into the NFSHS provides a robust foundation for ongoing soil health monitoring and informed agricultural policy development.
